The rise in temporary hires vs. permanent positions within CRM

It seems nary a day goes by that I haven't been running into some kind of news story like the ones below.  They don't discuss CRM in particular, but the job market in general.

Some of the news articles have been speculating that the coming trend will be that permanent positions of every variety will be harder to come by, and that it may be difficult for today's college grads to procure any kind of stable employment in the long-term.  Everyone knows that project hires at the field crew level have usually been the norm within CRM.  Will this trend then increase and those few permanent field arch positions become even rarer than they are today?  Is this a bad sign for the field tech who was able to somehow squeak by jumping from project to project in years past?  Could this also extend to some of the more senior positions where folks may be hired for contracts of a specific duration? I'd love to hear your thoughts/observations on this subject.

I fear it will, at least for the short term.  I hear from companies quite often that are trying to find enough work just to keep their current full timers on - at least part time - and I suspect that once works starts up again, those will be the first ones hired back full time.  I feel certain that once the rest of the economy rebounds, so will our field, but there will either be a lag, or we will be ahead of the curve - depending on how speculative developers get.
