archaeologyfieldwork.com stance on arch union, pay rates,etc

Lately I've fielded several inquiries about the recent discussions on archaeologyfieldwork.com regarding the proposed union. I've also been asked to refrain from posting or allowing the posting of advertised positions that pay below a certain hourly wage. In the past I have also been asked to forbid "bad" CRM companies to post jobs here.

As I have noted in several posts, it has been my policy to try to maintain a balance at archaeologyfieldwork.com. This website exists to provide information and a forum for discussion for those within the internet archaeological community. I have my own personal beliefs on what we should be paid, on what role a potential union might play within CRM, and which companies I would like to work for and which I'd rather avoid. However, I would like to put my personal opinions aside and maintain a neutral stance on all of these issues when it comes to the administration of this website.

I feel very uncomfortable with the prospect of subjectively withholding job listings, postings from certain companies, etc. I've always felt that part of my role in running this website was to put information out there, and it is up to the individual to decide what they would like to do with that information. The prospect of changing my role of webmaster to that of a subjective censor or influencer is one that I am honestly very uncomfortable with.

Please remember that this site is here for you, and discussions of all of these topics are certainly welcome.

That position is eminently fair Jennifer, and as you have pointed out in other fora folks are always welcome to share their opinions and experiences privately through PM and email.

I think the way in which you manage the forum is great. No need to make apologies. Although it is nice to get a feel for a prospective company, you can usually find someone who has an opinion to share. Too much tinkering by the admin's and I think that it would hinder everyone's experience overall. This is great as is.

To second Jason's point I'll add that I browse through another, and completely different, page on occasion. There the Mods frequently edit and delete posts, often to the consternation of the poster, and almost always without explanation, much to the frustration of subsequent visitors, who now have no idea what was said, nor why it was deleted. Very frustrating. The format we have here (offensive and libelous material being subject to deletion) is as democratic as one can make it without devolving into an anarchic system.

On the subject of wages and archaeology...

Would it be possible to organize some kind of anonymous salary survey? I wonder if part of the reason people accept such low pay is simply out of ignorance of what the "going rate" is? Other fields arrange such things and it actually helps out significantly in salary negotiation.

I would just start a thread but I've found things aren't terribly anonymous here since many of us know each other here are or have a pretty good idea on people's true identities.

KB, ACRA and SAA have done this in the past. I think ACRA still has their recent data up on their website.
