In search of the past.
Archaeological research at Isaiia, a Romanian Chalcolithic site

The overall objective of our research is the discovery of traces of archaeological cultures along the Prut River and understanding the characteristics of economic, social and spiritual needs of human communities in pre-and protohistory of this space. Similarly, project objectives and clarification about the chronological development of the region and relationships between different communities, both at close range and over large distances. Finally, the research aims to reconstitute the processing chaine operatoire of prehistoric ceramics and generally to better understand the complex relationships of prehistoric artifacts and the people who produced and used them. In this respect, an important component of the project is about experimenting with the production and use of prehistoric ceramics.

Excavations will take place at the late Chalcolithic settlement at Isaiia (Iasi County). Continuing research from the last 10 years (started in 1996), this year's excavations have as the main objective the final uncovering of two Chalcolithic houses identified by magnetometric prospecting in order to better understand Pre-Cucuteni settlement planning. We will also continue research on a lithic workshop (probably belonging to Bronze Age) found in part in the 2010 field season. The excavations planned for this summer may also examine one or more of the tomb inhumation on the site (either Bronze Age or Sarmatian age).

The field school and research excavation will take place between 1 and 30 July 2013.

If you would like to attend the field school or take part in the excavation, please contact the project director, Felix-Adrian Tencariu (email: adifex(AT)gmail.com ; phone:
