Department Overview
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) strives to find new ways to improve our processes, measure our progress, communicate our performance, and partner with others to find more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible ways to meet our customers' needs.
Land & Environmental Management (L&EM) includes a staff of approximately 300 land managers, surveyors, land rights and acquisition specialists, resource scientists, and environmental planners. Our goal is to ensure that PG&E's lands are well managed and our property rights are protected, that we work closely with state and federal regulators to protect the unique landscapes and environmental resources found on these properties, and that we acquire and comply with all environmental permits required to conduct activities on these properties. Our work requires close integration between our team of planners, land specialists, and environmental scientists, as well as with legal staff, environmental policy and the gas, electric, and generation lines of business we support.
Position Overview
PG&E currently has an opening for an internship in the San Ramon office as a Cultural Resources Intern in the Environmental Planning & Permitting (EP&P) section within the Land and Environmental Management (L&EM) Department. The Cultural Resources Team provides technical support for implementation of cultural resources compliance tasks contained in FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) licenses, agency permits, and settlement agreements. The Cultural Resources Team also provides technical support addressing cultural resources issues associated with construction, operation, and maintenance activities.
The Cultural Resources Intern will primarily work on tasks of limited scope under the guidance of more senior cultural resource specialists. Task-level project work includes time spent in the field where additional knowledge of company operations, work practices, and facilities will be gained. Project participation is primarily focused at acquiring in-depth understanding of utility OM&C activities, PG&E's environmental management goals and objectives, and business processes.
Communicating with EP&P, L&EM, and Line of Business (LOB) team members both verbally and in writing is a key requirement of this job.
The successful candidate will be expected to use independent judgment; enhanced verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
Safety
Performs all work in accordance with PG&E safety goals and practices: completes all required safety training and promotes safety awareness
Technical Studies
Work closely with senior cultural resources staff to plan and manage implementation of studies and assessments associated with specific cultural or historical issues.
Develop cultural resources study plans to achieve regulatory compliance and cost effectiveness
Work closely with senior staff to manage studies in support of licenses, permits and compliance
Conduct cultural resources technical work, as required to meet project goals, using the highest standards of scientific investigation and analysis.
Implement technical studies; identify/analyze project impacts; and develop/recommend protection and mitigation, measures with the guidance of senior staff.
Help prepare technical reports and input for licensing and permitting documents.
Information Management
Help manage an electronic document management system.
Compile and organize electronic versions of documents and reports.
Organize and compile federal licensing documents.
Agency and Stakeholder Group Meeting Participation
Attend meetings with state and federal agencies and various stakeholder groups.
Assist with the documentation and organization of meetings.
Help prepare meeting materials.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates will be working towards a undergraduate or graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Resources Management or closely related fields (students must be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship)
Desired Qualifications
Strong, proven experience with standard office computer applications including MS Work & Excel.
Experience using MS Access
Completed and passed an archaeological field methods course or field school or has 3+ months of work experience as an archaeological technician.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrates environmental leadership
Demonstrates commitment to community
PG&E typically is unable to provide VISA sponsorship to students on an F-1, J-1 or other student visa for this position.
