The
A site has been identified as an area where war dead were buried, an international team are called in to investigate.
- How many graves are there?
- How many are buried within?
- Can the team recover the bodies and make sense of a range of evidence in order to restore the identities of these unknown soldiers, giving closure to families and providing a more fitting burial?
On this course you will participate in a series of lectures in the process, techniques and purpose of mass grave excavations. The majority of the course will take place in the field where you will gain first-hand experience in the investigation of simulated mass graves. The course also covers the process, techniques and staffing of a temporary mortuary. You will assist in the set up of this facility; working as part of a team alongside experienced staff where three days of intensive case work and analysis of human remains will take place.
Working as part of a team alongside experienced staff you will gain experience of:
- Investigative procedures and processes of the practical scientific excavation of mass graves
- Understanding the principles, theories and reasons for mass grave excavation
- Understanding of the roles of a range of disciplines involved in mass grave excavations
- Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a professional or training capacity to recover and identify human remains.
- Practical skills in search, location, recovery and recording of human remains and associated artefacts
- Investigative procedures and processes of practical temporary mortuary workflow
- Understanding of the roles of the forensic and crime scene disciplines involved in temporary mortuaries
- Analysis and recording skills
- The identification process.
The course offers the option of channelling experience either more towards evidence recovery or analysis of finds and remains in the field mortuary. If you opt for the academic assessment (see below) you will need to confirm whether you want to specialise in the 'Temporary Mortuary' or the 'Mass Graves' aspect of the course.
