Park Ranger Interpreters connect people to parks. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park Ranger Interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. They help visitors explore the many dimensions of parks by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources.
National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.
The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to 3 temporary positions at Crater Lake National Park. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: 06/2012
Crater Lake National Park is located in southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range, 100 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. The beautiful blue lake lies inside a caldera created when Mt. Mazama collapsed, 7,700 years ago following a very large eruption. Generous amounts of rain and winter snow have filled the caldera to a depth of 1,943 feet with fresh, clear water. The surrounding forests and meadows protect many species of plants and animals that co-exist hear this mountain lake. Many, such as the Clark's Nutcracker, have mutually beneficial life characteristics which continue to be of interest to science.

Crater Lake National Park is seeking interpreters who marvel in the sense of wonder found in our nation's heritage and natural surroundings. Interpreters who strive to form valuable connections between the interests of our visitors and the wonders they have come to seek. Interpreters are responsible for researching, preparing, and presenting a wide variety of interpretive and educational programs. Program topics include natural and cultural history, geology and volcanology, park issues, including lake research, fire management and wildlife management, and critical resource issues, global climate change. Program types may include a wide range of venues within the interpretive spectrum; roving-informal interpretations, formal illustrated campfire programs, narrated boat tours, guided walks/hikes, short formal talks, on-and off-site educational programs, step-on narrated bus tours and others. Interpreters will operate audio-visual equipment. The interpreter will also staff visitor information centers, stock site bulletins and other information materials, and is responsible for managing accountable property. They may respond to telephone, mail, and e-mail information requests; providing informal interpretation and information about the park and surrounding areas. Interpretation at Crater Lake NP requires the individual to have the ability to do strenuous hikes at elevations ranging from 6,000 to 9,000 feet, and the ability to work often in times of inclement weather conditions including summer thunder, lightning, and rain/snow storms. Seasonal training in interpretive methods and techniques will be conducted during the first weeks of the summer season.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
