The National Park Service preserves unimpaired, the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Park ranger interpreters perform informational, educational, and interpretive functions. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery.  Beyond providing simple information, park ranger interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for visitors to care for park resources.

In this case, the employee will use their interpretive and organizational skills to lead a team of volunteers who staff a historic site at Rocky Mountain National Park.  A majority of work time is spent coordinating the work of these volunteers, rather than personally presenting interpretive programming.

This position supervises a team of 30-40 volunteers in the operation of Holzwarth Historic Site, a former 1920s-era guest ranch ("dude-ranch') on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. This historic site is staffed by volunteers who provide tours and programming for adults and children. The primary responsibility of this position is to coordinate these volunteers, including recruiting, interviewing, reference checks, selection, training, coaching, and problem solving. This employee must be exceptionally adept and diplomatic in all dealings with people. Leading a team of volunteers often requires outstanding people skills to reduce and address interpersonal conflict or situations where volunteers may resist standard operating procedures. Moreover, this candidate is responsible for training and coaching volunteers in professional interpretive techniques and national standards for interpretation. Therefore, candidates must have demonstrated experience working in the field of interpretation, preferably with experience as a trainer or coach of interpretive practices. Employee will also research, prepare, and present occasional talks and ranger-led hikes for the general public as well as children’s programs, and will regularly staff a busy information desk.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, ranch implements and furniture, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
