University of Hull - Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation
The University of Hull is pleased to offer a PhD fellowship to take effect from 1 May 2011. The holder of the award will be based at the University's Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation.
Funded by the Marie Curie Actions, the fellowship is one of 13 PhD fellowships are available in this multidisciplinary study on the history and legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The PhD positions are based at 10 institutions, in 7 European countries, and cover a wide range of disciplines including archaeology, genetics, bioinformatics, history and social anthropology. Each PhD position is fully funded for 3 years and must commence on 1 May 2012. Deadline for applications is 31 January 2012.
The successful applicant for the Hull fellowship research and write a thesis on issues relating to historical records of ethnicity pertaining to the origins of enslaved Africans. The primary supervisors of the fellow will be Professors David Eltis (Emory/British Columbia) and David Richardson (Hull). A third supervisor may be appointed, depending on the successful applicant's interests and skills. The successful applicant will have a first degree and/or Masters in History or a related discipline, including Historical Anthropology; training in African History; a working competency in Portuguese and/or Spanish as well as in English; and demonstrable skills in creating databases. A willingness to undertake training in other electronic packages such as GIS will be an advantage.
